A Sense of Place Etc.

by Greg Michalson
I’ve sometimes said in describing what we do that Unbridled Books is a regional publisher, just not from any one region. There are so many different ways that this statement is true, even though we’re a small press with a national footprint, marketing and distribution and with aspirations to being a part of the national conversation—if there is such a thing anymore. Our authors and their books certainly have universal appeal and deserve national recognition.
But one simple way this is true is with the books that grow from a particular landscape or culture and that help us understand our heritage and define who we’ve become today. Peter Geye’s characters are profoundly brought to life by their Great Lakes environment. No one writes about small town Midwest life in quite the same way as Timothy Schaffert. William J. Cobb’s The Bird Saviors captures a haunting vision of the new West.
In fact, the literature of the West of course has embodied the American spirit, identity and dream. Some of those books that Fred and I have been privileged to bring you include Rick Collignon’s classic trilogy The Journal of Antonio Montoya, Perdido, A Santo in the Image of Cristobal Garcia and Lloyd Zimpel’s masterful A Season of Fire and Ice. If you haven’t read these, you must. And you’re in for a treat.
Also, M Allen Cunningham’s The Green Age of Asher Witherow; John Addiego’s Tears of the Mountain; Cathryn Alpert’s Rocket City; Susann Cokal’s Breath and Bones; David Cates’ Freeman Walker; Michael Pritchett’s The Melancholy Fate of Capt. Lewis; Nancy Zafris’ Lucky Strike
