Unbridled Books’ Significant Deal with Serpent’s Tail
Unbridled Books’ Significant Deal with Serpent’s Tail for The Mistress Contract by She and He
(Denver, CO) In a significant deal, Unbridled Books has sold World Rights excluding North America of its memoir by an anonymous couple - The Mistress Contract by She and He - to Serpent’s Tail.
Unbridled Books co-publisher Fred Ramey said, “I was thrilled when Hannah Westland approached us about The Mistress Contract. That wise and radical book provoked so many powerful conversations among its readers here that Hannah’s enthusiasm seemed like an extension of our own reading experience. And Serpent’s Tail’s energy in acquiring world rights to the book truly promises to increase its reach around the world.”
Serpent’s Tail plans a November 2013 publication, following Unbridled Books’ release of its US paperback edition in January.
The Book Lady called The Mistress Contract “incredible, provocative, and challenging. It demands to be read and reread, deliberated over and discussed.”
She and He first met at university and then lost touch. When they met again – having both been married to other people – they recognised a streak of independence and freedom from convention in each other and began an affair which led, eventually, to her proposing The Mistress Contract. The Contract established a unique set of terms for their relationship. He would provide her with a home and an income, while she would provide ‘mistress services’: ‘All sexual acts as requested, with suspension of historical, emotional, psychological disclaimers.’
On a small recorder that fit in her handbag, this extraordinary couple began to tape their conversations about the relationship– at home and in restaurants, on the telephone and in bed. This book is based on those tapes, produced thirty years later, when they decided to open up the innermost workings of their relationship to scrutiny. Signed in 1981, the contract is still in force. She is 88, and he is 93. They remain anonymous.
“What shocks in The Mistress Contract is the discourse, not the intercourse….As He and She go at it with the brainy chemistry of Beatrice and Benedick, the naked opinions expressed about men, women, and feminism are challenging, frequently infuriating, thought-provoking and just plain provoking, witty, poignant, and astonishingly progressive, considering the context of the recordings.”—Joni Rodgers, Boxing the Octopus
