Time and Place

Of course, readers just want to be entertained. Granted, what that means varies from reader to reader. But part of it, often, is being transported for a while to another time and place. Sometimes that includes “real life” fictionalized characters and/or crucial events or pivotal moments in history that lend the story its own inherent dramatic appeal, breathing new life into it or reexamining the moment from another perspective. Something like The Last Prince of the Mexican Empire, or Lost Son, or The Melancholy Fate of Capt. Lewis. Or in slightly different ways, The Pirate’s Daughter, Hallam’s War or Lucky Strike. Or, wow, Marc Estrin’s monumental Insect Dreams: The Half Life of Gregor Samsa. Prepare to be transported.
