Black Pajamas
by Christopher A. Berry
A tribute to the late, great Robert B. Parker.
I dressed carefully in my black raw silk ninja pajama pants and jacket. My black ninja slippers. I gave myself a critical look in the mirror. A killer in black. I looked dangerous.
Jackie came in and said, “Don’t you look cute.”
“I don’t look cute. I look dangerous,” I protested. “And don’t roll your eyeballs.”
“I am not rolling my eyeballs,” she said.
“You were rolling them mentally. I know you.”
Jackie rolled her eyeballs.
“See? You rolled them.”
“Yes, but I only rolled them to justify you imagining me rolling them. It was a freebie roll.”
This was clearly becoming too complicated.
I picked up the newspaper and began to read, pretending to ignore Jackie while trying to retain a shred of my dignity.
Jackie turned to go, said, “Bye, cutie,” and flounced out.
I snuck another peek in the mirror. What do women know?
“Dangerous,” I said.

Great story. You will have to take his place, now that he is gone!
