Brian Dettmer’s Artwork on Cover of Unbridled’s Fall Catalog

I have been working with books as material for my artwork for several years now. I seal them, sand them, cut into them and some would say I “destroy” them. I have the utmost respect for books and value them as links to the past and paths to the future. This is why I find them to be such an interesting material to work with. When I work with a book I do end its life as a functional tool to convey a story but I like to think that I freeze it in time, capture it a moment to last forever in a new context to open viewers minds to new possibilities.
When Unbridled Books contacted me to contribute a cover for the upcoming catalog I was excited to be a part of it and it was meant to be when I discovered that Steven Wallace also lived in the Atlanta area. We had great conversations as to what would work best and I couldn’t be happier with how it came out. The image “Brave New World” is one of the few sculptures I have done using fiction rather than non-fiction or reference material. It was an exciting piece to work on and its great to see it exposed to a broader audience in a different context.
If you are in Atlanta, Barcelona, London or anywhere in between you might be close to my work in a current show this spring and summer.
