The leaves are gone, and “the holidays” are upon us. This is the most important part of the year in the book trade. The Friday after Thanksgiving has long been dubbed “Black Friday” because legend has it this is the day a store’s accounts turn from red to black, and enter profitability. Publishers, on the other hand, often don’t see these profits (if any) until January, when stores have the cash to settle accounts. However, the truth is that every year retailers that track these things have actually seen “Black Friday” move closer and closer to Christmas itself (if it comes at all).
