Reading Lips Contest

Reading Lips Contest

Dear Readers,

Jill Conner Browne, that wonderful, effervescent writer we all are wild about, has asked me to introduce myself to a few of her favorite readers. Jill knows how to bring the party to the people everywhere she goes and she, I am most grateful to say, has invited me to join in the fun. She would love for you to get an early peek at my new memoir, “Reading Lips, A Memoir of Kisses”. The official publication date is April 5, 2011. It will then be available in trade paperback and on Kindle, iPad, Sony Reader and the Nook. But because she would like you to have the pleasure of jumping the line she requested that 100 advanced copies be sent to some her most faithful. When the Sweet Potato Queen asks, the world says yes! The response has been overwhelming. More than 800 copies were requested. So, for those who asked, but did not receive the full length copy we are popping a couple of chapters of “Lips” in the email. We aim to please.

Sometimes reading a memoir can feel a bit one sided. The author, in this case moi, prattles on about something or other, in this case different kinds of kisses, and the reader sits quietly taking it all in. But I would like to shake things up a bit. I want to hear about your own kisses. Stolen kisses, missed kisses, final kisses, first kisses, healing kisses. The kiss which may have changed your life. And the clever people at Unbridled Books will post your stories on their website. First name, last initial so your secrets are safe! Just write them down and click and send to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Invite your friends to do the same. Then I may sit here at my desk in Santa Cruz, California reading your tales. Getting a glimpse into your lives. (And you can read them, too, by visiting http://unbridledbooks.com/contest/rlc). In return for that I suppose I should share a little about my own life. I am married to Michael and have one child. A daughter Kira who is 25. An actor who has been living in New York for the past six years but is now spending some time in L.A. which makes me so happy we bought her an apartment in NYC. I was a newspaper columnist for more than 15 years and had an earlier memoir published called “Now Breathe”. It was about the adventure of being diagnosed with cancer. I am better now. No wiser, but better.

These days I am the Editor in Chief of a literary journal, “Memoir (and)”. I spend most of my time reading submissions while wearing pajamas. It is a glorious job and as close to retirement as I will ever get. When I am not reading submissions, I write. I turned 60 last year. My daughter decided I should have a special gift. She bought me a tattoo. Then we went to a happy hour for margaritas. And of course I went home and wrote about it.

I thank Jill for sharing her community of readers with me. I am excited to think of such a spunky group of woman reading a bit of “Lips ” before anyone else. And if you like this small sample I do hope you will come back for more.

Most, most warmly,

Claudia Sternbach
